“We were never truly independent until we joined the EEC”

Drew Hendry, Member of Parliament for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey hosts a series of interesting and informtive podcast – Scotland’s Choice which explores the different policy choices that could be made in an independent Scotland.

The latest podcast has Neale Richmond, Fine Gael TD for Dublin Rathdown in the 2020 General Election. He was previously elected to Seanad Éireann in April 2016, on the Labour Panel, where he was the Fine Gael Spokesperson on European Affairs in the Seanad. He is a strong advocate of the European Union and Ireland’s interests in it and is an outspoken critic of Brexit. His comments on currency are particularly apposite given how often this issue is raised by Unionists.

“We only got true independence when we joined the EU, the EEC as it was. But our independence has grown exponentially as the decades have moved on, and we were starting from a very, very low basis when we achieved it.”
